Vanessa Redgrave was born in London on January 30, 1937. Initially trained in ballet, she made her theatrical debut in London in 1958. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she played a variety of stage roles, including leads in a number of Shakespeare plays.
Redgrave's film career saw it's first big success with the 1966 film Morgan, for which Redgrave was nominated for an Academy Award. Other highlights include Julia (1977),for which she won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress, The Bostonians (1984), and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe (1991).
In 1962, Redgrave married director Tony Richardson. The couple had two daughters, Joely and Natasha, before divorcing in 1967. Both are actresses. In 1969, Redgrave gave birth to a son, Carlo, the son of Italian actor Franco Nero.
